REVIEW: Catch Me If You Can at The Alexandra

Dallas legend, Patrick Duffy and Happy Day's star, Linda Purl lead the cast in this new production of the gripping psychological thriller created by Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert.

On the face of it, the story's simple. Inspector Levine is called to a house in the remote Catskill mountains to investigate the disappearance of newly married Elizabeth Corban. A woman arrives at the house claiming to be the missing wife but, instead of celebrating the reunion, her husband accuses her of being an imposter.

Filled to the brim with laugh-out-loud moments, periods of suspense and an exceptional plot, Catch Me If You Can takes you on a turbulent ride in a story which, I think it's fair to say, could be considered convoluted. However it's one which is executed to perfection by the small, seven-person cast.

The production navigates the twists and turns of the story with some exceptional performances alongside a visually stunning set.

Duffy is known to audiences around the world for his twelve years in the role of Bobby Ewing in Dallas and is a performer with the charm and charisma you'd expect of an experienced leading man. Playing the role of Daniel Corban with very little time away from the stage must be demanding. But Duffy is a safe pair of hands who, alongside his real-life partner, Purl, brings a compelling performance to The Alexandra.

Purl has the weight of the entire production on her shoulders. Elizabeth Corban is the lynchpin on which the story is based and is a character with multiple personas. Purl's years of experience showed this evening with a striking performance and an enviable command of the stage.

On top of that, the source material for this piece is, quite simply, brilliant. With a twist that the vast majority of the audience were oblivious to until the last few minutes, Catch Me If You Can is a perfect example of classic muder-mystery brimming with comedy which really makes you think, analyse and draw conclusions (which generally change!) throughout.

Catch Me If You Can runs at The Alexandra Theatre until Saturday 30th April. For more information, or to get your tickets, head online to atgtickets.com/birmingham.
