REVIEW: Dreamboats and Petticoats at The Alexandra

Arriving at The Alexandra this week, Dreamboats & Petticoats: Bringing On Back The Good Times is a simmering time capsule of energy and emotion, exploding into song at every given opportunity!

Inspired by the smash hit, multimillion selling Dreamboats and Petticoats albums, the Dreamboats’ musicals feature some of the greatest songs ever written and are guaranteed to have you up on your feet and dancing in the aisles. This is the third in the franchise and that mantra shows no signs of slowing down!

The music performed on stage is a sure-fire winner from the first note and, although its fair to say that the story has a fairly predictable plot, it's also a well crafted, solid vehicle to carry you through the decades.

As soon as the curtain rises you’re thrown into St. Mungos Youth Club as Norman (Alastair Hill) and The Conquests kick off the show. Followed closely by the amazingly talented Bobby (David Ribi) and Laura (Elizabeth Carter) singing a collection of classics like Sealed With a Kiss

As the show progresses the stage gets brighter and more colourful, as do the outfits! If you didn’t think the energy could get any higher, you’d be wrong and by the end of the night people were on their feet singing and dancing to some classics.

The whole cast deserve a standing ovation for such a brilliant show, particularly the guys who weren’t just acting, but singing and playing their instruments live. Special mention has to go to Elizabeth Carter for her phenomenal rendition of the Lesley Gore classic, You Don’t Own Me.

I also have to mention David Benson for his magnificently funny portrayal of the late and great Kenneth Williams, who had the audience in stitches as soon as he came onto stage and left the audience chuckling long after he had left.

Dreamboats & Petticoats: Bringing On Back The Good Times is at the Alexandra Theatre until Saturday 26th March. To get your tickets, visit atgtickets.com/birmingham.
