REVIEW: Footloose at The Alexandra

Based on the 1980s screen sensation which took the world by storm, Footloose sizzles with spirit, fun and the best in UK musical talent as it opens its doors at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre.

City boy Ren thinks life is bad enough when he's forced to move to a rural backwater in America. But his world comes to a standstill when he arrives at Bomont to find dancing and rock music are banned. Taking matters into his own hands, soon Ren has all hell breaking loose and the whole town on its feet.

Following two critically acclaimed tours and a West End run, Footloose is back and better than ever. With a cast including Jake Quickenden (Hair, Peter Pan) as loveable cowboy; Willard, musical theatre royalty, Darren Day (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Priscilla - Queen of the Desert, Grease) as Reverend Moore and Joshua Hawkins (Jesus Christ Superstar) as Ren.

The show was teaming with cutting edge choreography with not so much as a foot out of place from any member of the cast. Footloose relies heavily on dance to separate it from its peers and the current touring production is a prime example of when good choreography is executed to perfection.

There's also a lot to be said for a strong cast and everyone on stage this evening thoroughly deserved both their turn in the spotlight and a well earned rest after 2 hours of non-stop action. Day excelled as Reverend Moore, showcasing a note perfect vocal and making it clear why he's enjoyed such a long career on stage.

Joshua Hawkins was an exquisite piece of casting as well, giving Ren the loveable personality he needs for the audience to have his back throughout - plus a voice to die for too! However, for me, Jake Quickenden had a stage presence, chemistry and personality that shone. Looking like he'd been performing the role of Willard for years, Quickenden's take on the part was spot on, giving enough 'simplicity' to get the audience on side but without making him a panto-style comedy sidekick.

Footloose is a much-needed a blast from the past. With a soundtrack of classic 80s hits, including Holding Out For A Hero, Let's Hear It For The Boy and of course the unforgettable title track Footloose it's the sort of theatre which compels you to get out of your seat and dance down the aisles.

Footloose is kicking up a stir at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre until Saturday 23rd April. For more information, or to get your tickets, head online to atgtickets.com/birmingham.
