REVIEW: Me And My Girl at Stourbridge Town Hall

Thursday’s performance of Me And My Girl from Tinkers Farm Opera was staged in the wonderful Stourbridge Town Hall, to a capacity audience, and was a hit with those that were there who experienced a trip down memory lane.

This was the third day in a row that I have sat in an auditorium to watch a form of entertainment; from the professional on Tuesday, to the hilarious stand-up of Wednesday to the local amateur performance on Thursday. Its been quite a week!

The story is set in the 1930’s and follows the upper-class world of the Harefords, haughty aristocrats who are seeking the heir to the title of Earl of Hareford. Bill Snibson, played wonderfully and energetically by Richard Cooper, a Cockney from Lambeth is found and like a scene from ‘King Ralph’, class wars begin. Bill's rough Cockney ways do not sit right with the Will of the last Earl and in order to gain his inheritance of the title and estate, Bill must satisfy the executors by learning gentlemanly manners.

The Duchess, played by Di Hingley, thinks that she can make Bill 'fit and proper' - think the male version of My Fair Lady, but without the lady! However, his Cockney girlfriend, Sally Smith, performed perfectly by Rebecca Bate, is not suitable and encouraged to go home. The Duchess plans a party in Bill's honour but despite Bill putting on his best posh accent and clobber, he tries to please his new-found upper-class lawyers, family and servants, but his every man roots quickly begin to show. Sally shows up in inappropriate garb, with her Lambeth friends and I’ll leave the next song to your imagination.

This is local am-dram at its best and there are clearly some standout performers on stage. Apart from those already mentioned, I must mention John Clay as Sir John Tremayne. John is a seasoned actor who has been treading the boards for decades and has also been seen on the small screen with parts in Emmerdale and that infamous insurance commercial with that dog! His presence on stage is a pleasure to behold and is very believable as the voice of common sense.

The show runs till 19th May at Stourbridge Town Hall, to get you tickets head to boroughhalls.co.uk.
