REVIEW: Turn Of The Screw at Wolverhampton Grand

Turn Of The Screw is a play based around Henry James' 1898 novella of the same name. This production is described as a 'deliciously atmospheric update' as well as being “intelligent, insightful and infused with other worldly menace”.

Fans of pieces including 'The Woman In Black' will be familiar with the mechanic of this show, which takes traditional thriller and puts it in front of a live theatre audience; something it can be increasingly difficult to do credibly. One thing I always find worrying about putting a show like this on stage is that when anything (but specifically theatre or movies) try too hard to be scary, they can be the complete opposite very easily.

This absolutely isn't the case with 'Turn Of The Screw' which is the sort of scary that messes with your mind a bit. This production probably won't make you launch out of your seat screaming, but will certainly make you jump with it's exquisite use of lighting to give a very simple stage set a haunting aesthetic.

Coupled with that, the soundtrack is beautiful in its' subtlety. Music, sound effects and ambience creep up on you and, in parts, make you question whether what you heard was both real and intentional.

The cast seal the deal for me, with an outstanding effort all round. Carli Norris plays a brilliantly complex interpretation of The Governess who goes from prim and proper childminder to manic obsessive in just over 90 minutes - but doesn't become a caricature which is so important. Alongside her fellow leads, this cast deliver a sublime interpretation that makes you stop in your tracks and compels you to watch - not least because then you can try and work out when you're going to be reduced to a gibbering wreck in the corner next!

Turn Of The Screw runs at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre until Saturday 14th April. For more details, or to get tickets, head to grandtheatre.co.uk.
