Birmingham 2022 pledges another £100,000 for West Midlands artists

Artists are invited to submit proposals for four commissions of £25,000 to create new artworks responding to Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games sporting events

Birmingham and West Midlands based artists can now submit proposals for commissions of up to £25,000 to create new public space works in any art form that creatively respond to sports that will be competed at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Birmingham 2022 culture programme is offering four artists the chance to create work based on four sporting events at the upcoming Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games; Aquatics – Swimming and Para Swimming, Athletics and Para Athletics, Basketball 3x3 and Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 and Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls.

Interested artists and creative organisations can visit birmingham2022.com/culture to find out more and submit their proposal ahead of the deadline of 14 September. Raidene Carter, Executive Producer for Culture and Live Sites at Birmingham 2022 said:

“We are delighted to once again be calling upon the fantastic artists based in Birmingham and the West Midlands to help us bring the Birmingham 2022 culture programme to life.

“This time, we are inviting creatives from across all artistic disciplines to submit proposals for commissions of up to £25,000 to artistically interpret some of the sporting highlights of the Commonwealth Games.

“From podcasts and poetry, to art installations and animation, we want to hear from artists who can show us how inspired they are by The Games and who want to be part of the biggest one-off culture and sporting event to happen in the West Midlands.”

This Sports commissioning initiative by the Birmingham 2022 culture programme follows the launch of the Birmingham City Council funded £2million Creative City Grants scheme for community groups across Birmingham. Recruitment is also still live for the Critical Mass dance participation project, a unique opportunity for young people to be part of the Games’ major cultural events.

The Birmingham 2022 culture programme will deliver a six-month cultural festival across Birmingham and the West Midlands running from March to August 2022. The festival aims to promote and showcase the rich and diverse creative talent of the city and region to a global audience. More information about the Culture Programme will be released this Autumn.
