Birmingham Salvation Army football team to take part in national homelessness tournament

A team from Birmingham’s Salvation Army Lifehouse (hostel) will compete in the charity’s annual homelessness football tournament, The Partnership Trophy, this week.

William Booth centre will go head-to-head in Manchester on Wednesday 25 September against more than 25 teams from across The Salvation Army’s homelessness services.

Now in its ninth year, the tournament is a day for celebrating the achievements of service users, promoting a positive and healthy activity, and boosting the confidence of people who have tackled many obstacles in their lives. Manager of the Lifehouse, Mr Edward Dixon said:

“This annual event of joining football teams from across the UK means so much for our residents. It’s a time to get together for something outside of their city limits and meet others in friendly competition.

"The value it gives our residents means that positive, supportive memories are being made as well as strong friendships and a sense of belonging”.

The Salvation Army has recently helped Scott Kelly from Birmingham, who became homeless in August, to apply for longer term accommodation. Scott had been experiencing rough sleeping while trying to hold down work. Unfortunately, Scott had lost his accommodation and hadn’t been able to move into other suitable accommodation, so he turned to The Salvation Army through SIFA Fireside.

Scott has time to reconsider what job he would like to do for the future, he feels more positive about his future job prospects and training for a new career. Scott will be taking part in The Salvation Army Partnership Trophy on Wednesday.

TV pundit and Liverpool legend, Mark Lawrenson, will be the special guest at this year’s tournament. Mark said:

“Events like this show what a positive impact football and sport in general can have on someone’s physical and mental health. Finding something you enjoy and can share with others is vital in improving quality of life.

"I’m privileged to be attending this tournament and I look forward to meeting the teams in Manchester.”
