Dudley CVS honours volunteers in glittering ceremony

SODA’s Cheryl Cross collects her award for wellbeing

The Dudley Council for Voluntary Service Awards took place last night in a glittering ceremony at Brierley Hill Civic Hall.

The awards recognise the hard work and commitment of volunteers to making a difference in people’s lives.

Among the recipients were hairdressers 'Blaze' and their team of Blaze Angels who support children and young people across the borough, making sure they get presents at Christmas.

The Sporting Champion Award went to Malcolm Lindsay who has spent more than 40 years building and running the Stourbridge Youth Football League, whilst Christine Connelly and Stephen Jones shared the prize for Community Action.

The team behind the Dudley Dementia Cafe's were recognised, alongside Age UK Dudley's Alan Lovell, for their contribution to healthy communities and Cheryl Cross, a volunteer with 'Survivors of Domestic Abuse' was commended for her work with men and women across the Black Country.

Kerry Davies, who houses vulnerable children through the YMCA's 'Open Door' scheme was thanked for the difference she makes to the lives of the young people she supports.

The 'Ray McGuirk Award for Outstanding Young Volunteer' was a joint win for Rebecca Lawler and Keira Pooler who gave birth to a sillborn child in 2015. Her hard work and determination in his name saw Russells Hall Hospital benefit from a cuddle cot so women going through the same circumstances can feel more at ease.

The final award of the evening, recognising long service in the voluntary sector, was presented to Keith Horsfall who - as well as being chair of Black Country Radio - is a prominent figure in the local arts sector. Keith was recognised for his work with societies including Gig Caritas and the Black Country Arts Council.
