Dudley Council is asking borough residents to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia with a tribute of heart shaped hands.

A compilation of people’s photos of their hands, making a heart shape, will be shared on social media with the hashtag #LoveFromDudley.

The rainbow flag will be raised at the council house on May 15 at noon and will fly all weekend in conjunction with the global event on May 17, to raise awareness of the persecution suffered by LGBT+ people around the world. Councillor David Stanley, The Mayor of Dudley, said:

"Last year we hosted a moving and uplifting event on Coronation Gardens. As it is not possible to hold an event this year we will be proudly raising the rainbow flag once again on both the Council House and the Castle in solidarity with LGBT+ people around the world.

"It’s important people follow the government advice in marking this special occasion and stay at home. It’s an opportunity to be creative and help save lives at the same time."

This second year of marking IDAHOBIT has taken into account the restrictions on social distancing as a result of the coronavirus outbreak and will be on the council’s social media platforms. The Dudley logo will also have a splash of colour to reflect support of the NHS and key workers until the Covid-19 crisis is over and in recognition of the day. 

Dudley Councillors Adam Aston and Shaun Keasey, who were involved in bringing the event to the borough have called on residents to get involved. They said:

"This year’s event is being held virtually, so we're asking local people, to submit a named photograph of themselves making a heart with their hands which can be edited into a film to celebrate Dudley's diversity.

"We're delighted that our Artistic Director Chris Passey has arranged for local born West End star, Jonathan David Dudley, to support the event by providing the soundtrack to our celebration.

"This year may be a little different but still sends the message that Dudley stands with persecuted LGBT+ people around the world."
