Engineer to carry washing machine up Snowdon for Alzheimer’s Society

A man from the Black Country is uniting against dementia by carrying a washing machine to the top of Mount Snowdon in Wales and back down again.

58-year-old Perry Ware, an engineer from Dudley, will be taking on the gruelling trek on 29 September while raising vital funds for the UK’s leading dementia charity, Alzheimer’s Society.

Perry will carry the washing machine to the highest point of the tallest mountain in Wales, before descending back down again, taking the Llanberis path and starting from Penceunant Isaf, the coffee shop at the bottom of the famous mountain. Perry said:

“My wife used to work with people with Alzheimer’s and dementia and we also found out recently that one of our work colleague’s father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It has really affected the whole family.

“I have done many challenges for charity since turning 50, but the only one like this was carrying a fridge up Snowdon! I completed the challenge successfully but due to the amount of pain I was in afterwards I said never again!

“Training has been really difficult due to having a frozen shoulder and neuralgia in my neck and leg, which hindered my training for a while but I’m hoping to raise over £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Society. It’s so important to support this charity because in our lifetime we will all know someone or know of someone who will develop this very cruel disease.

Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser for the Black Country, Emma Butler, welcomed Perry’s decision to help raise money for the charity. She added:

“It’s wonderful that Perry is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s Society with this quirky and very tough fundraising challenge. Dementia is now the UK’s biggest killer and there are approximately 4,000 people living with dementia in Dudley today.

“Dementia devastates lives, but dementia won’t win. Until the day we find a cure we will be here for anyone affected by dementia, wherever they are, whatever they’re going through. We need more people like Perry to join us now and unite against dementia.”

Alzheimer's Society has a fantastic range of events both in the UK and abroad. You can find out more at alzheimers.org.uk, or by contacting Emma on 07809 321819.
