Eurovision Winners Come To The Black Country

Three quarters of the original Bucks Fizz lineup, who won Eurovision for the United Kingdom nearly 40 years ago, are to perform in Dudley.

Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston, now known as Formerly Of Bucks Fizz, will be at Dudley Town Hall on Thursday June 29 with special guest Bobby McVay. The announcement comes as Kiev prepares to host the 62nd annual Eurovision Song Contest in Ukraine on Saturday 13th May.

Along with fourth band member Bobby G, the group won the hearts of the nation with their skirt-ripping antics back in 1981. One of the very first manufactured pop bands, Bucks Fizz soared to national fame when winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin that year with pop classic Making Your Mind Up.

It sold in excess of 15 million copies, reaching number one in the charts in nine countries around the world and spending 219 weeks in the UK charts alone. The band went on to release more than 20 singles over the next few years including two more number ones - My Camera Never Lies and Land Of Make Believe. Peter Jordan, borough halls manager, said:

“We are delighted to be welcoming Cheryl, Mike, Jay and Bobby to Dudley. The band really captured the public imagination winning Eurovision – and we have only had one other winner since then.

They are still thought of very fondly by a lot of people and still fantastic performers, so it promises to be a great night. The band always look forward to their concerts in the Midlands, we would urge people to ‘make your mind up’ and book tickets today.”

Tickets for the show on June 29 cost £23 plus booking fees, with doors opening at 6.45pm and starting at around 7.30pm. For further information, or to book, log onto boroughhalls.co.uk or call 01384 812812.
