First Duncan Edwards Day to be celebrated in Dudley

A morning of fun and music in Dudley town centre will celebrate a local footballing legend during the inaugural Duncan Edwards Day on Monday 1st October.

Around the statue of Duncan Edwards, from 10.30am, the event will feature footballing freestyler Ewan Baggott who will entertain with his gravity-defying football tricks. Priory Primary School Choir will take part in two singing sessions whilst Marlene, the Black Country wench, will bring her own brand of humour to the proceedings.

Black Country Radio will be broadcasting live from the event and there will be a wreath-laying by family of Duncan Edwards and the Mayor of Dudley on what would have been Duncan’s 82nd birthday. Councillor Alan Taylor, Mayor of Dudley, said:

"Duncan Edwards is remembered as a football hero both in his home town, Dudley, and in Manchester where he played for Man United as one of Busby’s babes, as well as the England team.

"If Duncan Edwards Day becomes an annual event this will be a continual reminder to future generations and something for the community to build on and be proud."

During the afternoon from 1pm to 3pm, the Duncan Edwards Foundation charity office (above Black Country T-Shirts in Castle Street) will be open to the public to view archives, photos and share stories. Refreshments will be available. Rose Cook-Monk, founder of the Duncan Edwards Foundation, said:

"I am grateful to Dudley Council for backing the first official Duncan Edwards Day - it’s great that they agree that Duncan should be remembered and it's fabulous we can celebrate Duncan in this way.

"It’s another way that the Foundation and I are keeping Duncan's name alive - it is something we are passionate about."

A fundraising music night is also being held on the evening of Monday 1st October at The Station Hotel. For more information about Duncan Edwards Day visit the charity’s website
