Halesowen choirs to perform at landmark concert

Two Halesowen choirs are gearing up for a landmark concert at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Sunday.

The Community Spirit concert 2016 is part of the Symphony Hall's 25th anniversary celebrations and Halas Homes and Lutley Community Voices members will join over 500 singers for the concert.

Joining Halas Homes and LCV will be Black Voices, Town Hall Gospel Choir, Voices Entwined, Saragamdhun, Sing2gether, St Stephens Gospel Choir, The Choir With No Name, Brandhall Community Choir, Lichfield Gospel Choir, QuintonCommunity Choir and Stream Of Sound.

Fay Todd, community engagement manager, said: “Reflecting on Community Spirit each year is always a joy to see how individuals benefit from the programme in so many ways, from learning a new style of music, meeting friends from across the city or performing on stage in one of our world class venues for the first time.

“Connections often go beyond the programme with choirs choosing to collaborate on other projects and performances following their time with Community Spirit."

She added: "This demonstrates the importance and power of bringing groups together from across the region to share their ideas from the start which are fed into the programme."

Glynis Myles, who runs the signing choir at Halas Homes, has worked with LCV as they learn to sign one of the songs to be performed at Symphony Hall, while members of the community choir have attended rehearsals at Halas Homes.

Margaret Jones, music director at Lutley Community Voices, added: “Taking part in Community Spirit at Birmingham Town Hall in recent years has been an essential factor in the growth of the choir since its formation in 2012.

"We now number over 70 members and are so excited about performing at Symphony Hall."

She added: "The project has led to friendships with a number of choirs in the area, but we are particularly delighted to be able to link up with our near neighbours, Halas Homes, for this year’s event.

"Working with them reminds us of what joy singing together can bring."

The Community Spirit concert starts at 6pm and tickets cost £8, phone 0121 780 4849 for more information or visit www.thsh.co.uk/event/community-spirit-2016.
