Inca the bear has a lazy Sunday at Dudley Zoo

Asiatic black bear, Inca, enjoyed a thoroughly lazy Sunday yesterday as she began her annual spell of semi-hibernation.

The 38-year-old female – thought to be the oldest bear of her kind in the world – was spotted taking it nice and easy this weekend.

Inca goes into semi-hibernation, or a period of torpor, in her den between late November and March but has been known to make an appearance if there is a particularly mild winter’s day. Curator Richard Brown said:

“Inca’s spending lots of time indoors asleep at the moment, but she definitely likes to get out if the weather is unusually warm. She’s a firm favourite with visitors who will love seeing her enjoying a lazy Sunday.”
