Kids' designs urge drivers to park safely outside Oldbury school

Creative kids got out their colouring pens to encourage people to park safely outside their school.

Pupils at Lightwoods Primary School’s Clent Road site in Oldbury have designed banners and signs urging drivers to park safely at drop-off and pick-up times.

The winning designs – which tell drivers of the dangers of blocking zigzag lines and drives, as well as encouraging parents and carers to walk their children to school – are now on display. Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for sustainable transport Councillor Jackie Taylor said:

“We were really concerned, as were the school, that the parking outside Lightwoods’ Clent Road building was getting really dangerous. Parents and carers were parking irresponsibly, blocking residents’ driveways and putting children at risk.

“We asked the children to help us by speaking to their families about our concerns and encouraging them to park further away from school and walk the rest of the way, or walk to school if they live near enough.

“The children created wonderful images and it was very difficult to choose the winners. I really hope parents and carers take on board the children's messages and park safely away from school.”

Acting head teacher Jenny Wright added: “We are delighted with our new banners and posters. The children have been very excited to see their work around the area and we are grateful to Sandwell Council’s Road Safety team for their input and support in helping keep children safe.”
