Local dance school celebrates 20th anniversary on Broadway

50 dancers from Cradley Heath in the West Midlands are preparing for the performance opportunity of a lifetime in New York when they head to Broadway.

Members of Debonair Dance Academy, based on School Street, Cradley Heath, will be flying stateside and taking to the Broadway stage on 24th July to perform a series of routines as part of a show at the New York Town Hall Theatre.

The Town Hall Theatre is located at 123 West 43rd Street, between Sixth Avenue and Broadway, in midtown Manhattan New York City and seats 1,500 people.

The performance in New York will be the highlight of a celebratory year for the dance academy, which has been open for 20 years. Throughout two hugely successful decades, dancers have been given opportunities to perform in London’s West End, at the O2 Arena, at Disneyland Paris four times and on 5 cruise ships in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Most recently, the academy celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a performance at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Debonair Dance Academy was formed in 1999 by Principal Debbie Baggott who taught just four pupils at her first class. Since then, the dance academy has grown to over 180 dancers, many previous students have gone on to work professionally in the West End and around the world. On the 20th anniversary of the dance school and the performance on Broadway, Debonair Dance Academy principal Debbie Baggott said:

“Having worked as a professional dancer for 14 years before opening my dance academy, I know first hand the thrill of performing. It’s any performers dream to dance in the West End, which we’ve achieved, let alone Broadway.

"I’m delighted to be able to offer my own dancers an experience so prestigious as this.”

For some of the dancers, this will be the first time they have performed outside of the UK, and for many of them the first time visiting New York. They will be able to go sightseeing, watch Broadway shows and celebrate together at an after-show party in Times Square.
