Macmillan launch virtual support for people living with cancer

As Wolverhampton follows the government’s advice to stay at home, local cancer support centres are reaching out to self-isolating cancer patients with a package of virtual support.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, based at New Cross Hospital, is temporarily closed to visitors due to the pandemic. However, the determined team have found safe ways to continue to support local people affected by cancer by working remotely and using telephone appointments to continue offering many of their services. Hilary Waite, the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Manager, said:

‘We may be closed for face to face discussions, but we remain committed to supporting people living with cancer in and around Wolverhampton at this difficult time.

“People living with cancer, their family and their carers are already living with day to day challenges and the current situation only makes the situation more difficult. If you need help, we are only a phone call away.”

The Macmillan Support Centre team in Wolverhampton are offering remote counselling, psychological support and benefits advice by appointment using telephone. You can also email the team to ask questions if you need more information about your cancer or treatment.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Centre was originally funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and is run by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The centre supports anyone affected by cancer living in Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas. Lorien Barber, Macmillan Partnership Manager, added:

“We are doing everything we can to make sure our vital support continues to be available for much needed clinical advice, financial information and emotional support during this difficult time.

“This is why we are so grateful that the staff at the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre have quickly adapted to the situation and put plans in place to continue providing this service during such an unprecedented situation.’
