Parents shock as newborn baby is given wrong name tag

A couple say their newborn was sent home from Russells Hall Hospital with the wrong name tag, leaving them fearing they had taken home somebody else’s child.

Gemma Evans and her partner Zeke Kennan say they were "gripped by panic" when they got their baby home and noticed the wrong name on the tag as they changed their new son, Tyler.

The pair have hit out at the hospital, saying they could easily have taken home the wrong child. Bosses at the hospital say an investigation has been launched.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Ms Evans said: “I was shocked and angry, I just couldn’t believe it. He could have gone home with the wrong family and we could have lost him.

“I was kind of panicking and I did think for a minute ‘have I got the right baby?’ How can they make such a mistake? When the baby is being released how can they not check the name tag before the baby is taken home?”

Tyler was kept in following his birth via caesarian section, because of a chest infection. The couple added that whilst their son seems alright at the moment, they've still got to get him checked out to ensure there was no confusion during the tests too.

Paula Clark, chief executive, of Dudley Group NHS Trust, confirms an investigation had been launched. She said:

“We take the safety and security of babies born and cared for at our hospital extremely seriously. We are undertaking a thorough investigation into concerns raised by the family of Tyler Evans.

“Unfortunately we are unable to comment further until the facts have been established and the investigation has concluded.”
