Summerhill School rocks out to hit musical

The school was turned into the school of rock as pupils wowed crowds with two performances of the hit musical last week.

The school in Kingswinford put on School of Rock on Thursday and Friday night with around 100 pupils taking part in the production, with the sound of guitars and drums reverberating around the packed school hall.

Year 10 pupil Harvey Dalloway was cast in the lead role of Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe rock star who decides to earn a bit of extra cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. He turns a class of straight A pupils into a rock band – and then plots to get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents or the headmistress finding out. James Bowkett, Executive Headteacher at Summerhill School, said:

“I was so proud of the students, who put on a wonderful performance on both nights. It’s very important for children to have fun at school as well as to learn, and I think it was clear to everyone who came to watch that the pupils in this production had an absolute ball.

“One of the feedback slips we received from parents said it was the best high school show they had ever seen, and the responses were very positive across the board.

“It was put on by three members of staff who haven’t been with us long, but I thought their efforts were exceptional and it points to very promising signs for future productions. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next time.”
