Teachers prepare for charity marathon

Around 23 staff from different departments at High Arcal School, in Dudley, will take part in Carver's Wolverhampton Marathon this September.

It will see them take part in the 10k run and 20k cycle event. Mr Mahey, director of enterprise at the school, said:

"We want to raise as much money as possible for Compton Hospice - £1,000 would be great. I wanted to get involved with the Carvers run last year but then I had the idea that it would be great to get other staff to join with me too.

"We have a great health drive at our school and luckily they were keen to take part. We're on the summer holidays at the minute but we are still going to meet up and train together before we head back for the new term."

Mr Mahey said that preparation for the event had also gained a healthier focus in school. He continued:

"It's kick-started a whole well-being project for students and staff and we're even bringing in examples of our training to lessons, for instance in Science and Maths.

"To incorporate this into school life is important for us - its not often you see staff do something like this and the response from the children has been amazing. They're hoping to be there to cheer us on with banners and posters."

It will be the 20th anniversary of the Carver Wolverhampton Marathon Events this year, which will see people tackle a route around the city in a variety of formats – running, walking, cycling or in wheelchairs.

Participants range from serious club runners to fundraisers in fancy dress. The event will take place on September 3rd, to donate visit the schools JustGiving page.
