A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a crash in which a man died and a baby was seriously injured. Two air ambulances were sent to the scene on the A449 Stourbridge Road in Penn after the horror smash at around 6.30pm on Sunday .

A red Peugeot 206 was reported to have hit the central reservation and overturned, throwing a man and baby from the vehicle. The man, aged 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he has yet to be formally identified.

The baby was rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital with serious injuries while two other people, including the teenage driver, were also taken to hospital. Three ambulances and three paramedic officers attended the scene along with the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said:

"As a result of the collision a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation.

"Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased.

"A young baby boy was found in his mother’s arms at the side of the road. He was assessed and treated for serious injuries before being transported to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in a serious condition by land ambulance.

"His mother, who was a rear seat passenger, travelled to hospital with the baby but appeared to have escaped uninjured."

The driver of the car, a teenage male, also appeared to have escaped serious injury in the collision but was taken to New Cross Hospital as a precaution by land ambulance.

Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 682 of August 27.
