Tipton Explosion Leaves 5,000 Homes Without Power

Around 5,000 Black Country homes were left without power after a cable exploded under a street in Tipton yesterday.

A van and wall were damaged when the power cable exploded at around 9.15am on Park Lane West, where fire crews cordoned off a section of the pavement.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) are investigating what caused the explosion and will carry out repair work over the next few days. No injuries were reported.

WPD said most of the affected homes had their power turned back on almost immediately.

The explosion damaged a van parked next to the pavement of Park Lane West and the wall of a home.

The powercut came shortly after 12,000 homes in Walsall were left without electricity due to an unrelated cable problem.
