REVIEW: Mischief Movie Night at the Patrick Studio

Without a shadow of a doubt, The Play That goes Wrong is one of the best scripted comedies ever to grace any stage. The combination of physical comedy and out and out belly laughs made it a joy to watch. So when you learn that the Olivier award winning creators of the show are bringing a solely improvised piece to an intimate space like the Patrick Studio...well you don't hesitate!

From the moment the troupe grace the stage, the atmosphere in the room elevates and you can tell that everyone is out for a good time. Helped enormously by the intimate surroundings of the 200-seat auditorium, this is a show that goes from strength to strength as the minutes pass by!

Direct from a sold-out West End run and their return from six months on Broadway, he multi award-winning Mischief Theatre Company are returning to their comedy improv roots. At the start of the show, the audience are invited to suggest a genre, location and title and the team on stage will bring the show to life, complete with rewinds, fast forwards, director’s cuts and a live score.

The beauty of this production is in the execution. These performers are just naturally funny and even though the Brummie audience thought they could outwit them with their choices...they were proven wrong very quickly! The reaction from the crowd when our selections were made - a Western with both musical theatre and Bollywood connections, including a stampede of horses and cactus insertion, if you're interested - was one of expectation. However every expectation was not just met, but exceeded.

Improvisation and diving head first into an unscripted and potentially unpredictable piece would scare most performers to death. However Mischief Theatre Company showed their award winning credentials and took everything in their stride. This resulted in an hour and 20 minutes of sheer comedy brilliance that I'd urge anyone to book their seats for.

One of the best nights at the theatre in a long time - if 6 stars were a thing, I'd hand them the extra one with pleasure.

The show plays at the Patrick Studio until Sunday 1st July. For more information, or to get your tickets, head to birminghamhippodrome.com.
