REVIEW: Summer Holiday at the New Alexandra Theatre

The new UK Tour of Summer Holiday has arrived in Birmingham, red double decker in tow, and it brings a distinct ray of sunshine to an otherwise dreary weeknight in the second city.

We’ve all seen Cliff's films. They're on a par with the Carry On films and everyone has their favourites, however I've never have I had the pleasure of seeing this classic on stage before and after waiting forever and a (Darren) Day, the current production certainly didn't disappoint!

Summer Holiday has everything you need in a musical. Love Story? Check. Cheesy, well-known songs? Check. Energetic young people with dazzling white teeth? Check. It's almost a picture perfect example and add to that mix X-Factor finalist, Ray Quinn, as Don and you have a winning combination. The story that sits alongside is simple, but effective. A group of lads want a holiday, but soon pick up some singing girls who’s car let them down and then….. well, you know what happens next!

The story centres around that bus and the production team have pulled out all the stops to create a life size moveable red double decker on stage, that's even kitted out with beds and even a shower! The rest of the set is minimal, but there's no need for huge quantities of glitz and glamour to sustain this show - the audience fell in love with the story from the moment the curtain rose - and the love affair continued right to the bows.

The energy of this production is incredible and, even if you’re not a Cliff fan, you will know the songs and you won't be able to stop yourself singing along, as many of the audience did (sometimes when they shouldn’t).

The cast are equally as strong and Quinn’s performance was stunning. From his flexible dance moves to his voice that almost has a Cliff-esque vibe about it. He's supported wonderfully by Sophie Matthew (Humans, Our House) as Barbara; the stowaway who is running away from her controlling mother who wants her to be star. Other notable performances include Joe Goldie (Scooby Doo Live) as Edwin, the hapless and naive one who brings us some great dance moves and 70’s entertainment legend, Bobby Crush (Benidorm, Rocky Horror Show) who adds some maturity to the proceedings as Jerry who attempts, unsuccessfully, to assist Barbara’s mum to track her down.

To miss this would be a tragedy so make sure you don your knotted hankie and get some sunshine before it’s too late!

Summer Holiday continues at the New Alexandra Theatre until Saturday 16th June. For more information, or to get your tickets, head to atgtickets.com/birmingham.
