£57,000 boost for litter volunteers

Sandwell Council has secured £57,000 to clean- up town centres and encourage people to take pride in where they live.

The cash, announced by the Government last week, is being given to support volunteers and buy tools such as litter pickers, gloves and brushes – which will be used as part of Sandwell’s Big Spring Clean campaign, which was launched last week.

The money will also be used to organise events to encourage more families to get involved in looking after their communities. Sandwell Council will also be investing in more bins in town centres across the borough. Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for highways and environment Councillor David Hosell said:

“We have some fantastic volunteers who get involved with our Big Spring Clean and also the brilliant work of Litter Watch, the fantastic charity we work with on things like community litter picking. We’ll use this money to help kit-out our volunteers with equipment that they will use to make Sandwell’s streets sparkle.

“Litter isn’t someone else’s problem – it’s all of our problem. And the work of volunteers goes a long way to support our street cleansing work and helping Sandwell to look the best it can be.”
