Armed Forces Day set to mark centenaries

It’s a centenary special at this year’s Armed Forces Day, with the Dudley Council event set to mark 100 years since the formation of the Royal Air Force and the end of World War I next weekend.

Run in association with Black Country Housing Group, the Himley Hall and Park event will celebrate the work of service men and women past and present on Sunday 1 July from 11am to 5pm. Entertainment for all the family including vintage fairground rides, Punch and Judy shows and craft, food and vintage stalls will be on offer.

The Bluebird Belles, a vintage vocal harmony trio, and RAF Cosford Voluntary Band will perform on the day, veterans will be presented with their special medals and badges and there will be a display of current and historic military vehicles.

Visitors can also enjoy WWI themed history talks in the hall. Councillor Alan Taylor, The Mayor of Dudley, said:

“This special event gives us the chance to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made by those who have served and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

“It is also a wonderful event with a carnival atmosphere and there is something for all ages to enjoy.”

Black Country Housing Group, one of the area’s leading social housing providers is the event’s principal sponsor. This year’s event will also be supported by Blind Monkey Brewery. Amanda Tomlinson, chief executive at Black Country Housing Group, added:

“As a community focused organisation, we are honoured to be supporting this popular event. Armed Forces Day gives us chance to thank and celebrate the work of those who have served their country and local communities both at home and abroad.”
