Better late than never for star student officer

A new West Midlands Police recruit is proving testament to the adage ‘better late than never’ after acting on a life-long ambition to join the force.

Family and other commitments meant Sue Rai postponed plans to become a PC for almost three decades but she finally “followed her heart" in January last year by successfully applying to join West Midlands Police.

The 45-year-old has wasted little time in making an impression after combining catching crooks with supporting community initiatives and charities - and her passion for policing has seen her crowned Student Officer of the Year. After completing her initial training, the mother-of-three is currently based with Walsall Police and has already been involved in a number of arrests, ranging from those suspected of being involved in violence to shoplifters.

Sue, who is a member of the WMP Sikh Association, has also helped to establish stronger links with the borough’s diverse communities by getting involved in events at a local Gurdwara. Her community spirit is further illustrated by her support for charities such as the Sikh Toy Appeal which provide gifts for underprivileged children and families.

Sue worked at an emergency home repair business before signing up with WMP and urged others to follow suit. She said:

"It has definitely proven to be better late than never, and just shows opportunities to join the police are available. Due to family and other commitments it has taken a while to become an officer; but I have always remembered my father saying follow your heart and here we are today.

"I’m fully enjoying the role and when you enjoy what you’re doing you don’t feel like it’s only a job. Supporting people within the community is important to me which is why I am always keen to get involved in charities and initiatives such as the toy appeal.

"I think that is what always appealed to me about becoming a police officer, being able to actively do something to help others, and I am delighted I finally acted on my ambition."
