Brave Oscar receives special homecoming

A little superhero received a special homecoming following his final cancer treatment this week - a visit from Batman and West Midlands Police’s Perry Bear!

Oscar Beardmore from Wednesbury was diagnosed with the rare form of Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer − which attacks soft tissue like muscles - just four days before his third birthday in June last year.

The brave youngster has undergone 13 rounds of chemotherapy for the condition at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and has just had weeks of specialist proton therapy in Germany. Oscar’s tumour was successful removed in November but because there were still traces of cancer cells left behind, he needed to have treatment to prevent a relapse. It is hoped he will receive the all clear after his next assessment in three months.

On his return home from Germany on Friday (6 April) it was organised for Oscar to meet his own heroes Batman and Perry Bear - the Central Motorway Police Group’s road safety mascot - as a surprise after getting off the plane at Birmingham Airport. Oscar ’s own fascination with bobbies stems from his father Mark having friends in the force. Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman, from West Midlands Police, said:

“We have heard all about how brave and inspiring Oscar has been over the last nine months so when Batman asked if Perry Bear would join him in welcoming Oscar home we were delighted to help.

“Oscar is such a pleasant and happy boy and the way he and his family are raising awareness of cancer is incredible. He is a little superhero himself."

The rare form of cancer that Oscar has been fighting affects children under the age of five − with only around 60 youngsters a year being diagnosed in the UK. Mother Cheryl added:

"Oscar is a typical boy he loves superheroes, dinosaurs, cars, Lego and anything police-related; he’s remained such a positive happy little chap throughout treatment and we are very proud of him.

"This was such a lovely surprise and we are grateful for everyone who made this a special return home."
