Breed of dog responsible for fatal dog attack confirmed

Following extensive testing, the breed of dog responsible for the fatal attack on Lucille Downer has now been confirmed.

Both dogs were found to be American Bulldogs - a breed that is not banned in the UK.

Lucille, aged 85, died following a sustained attack in her rear garden in Boundary Avenue on Friday 2 April. Although neighbours rushed to her aid, she was sadly confirmed dead at the scene soon afterwards.

The ownership of the dogs was voluntarily transferred to police. Following specialist advice it was established the dogs could never be rehomed due to the violent act and they were humanely destroyed.

The owner of the two dogs, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of being the person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, causing death. He remains on conditional police bail pending further enquiries.

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation.

Lucille’s family have been informed of the latest development.
