Residents challenged to get fit whilst making a brew

People across Dudley borough are being asked to get a wriggle on when making themselves a drink under Dudley Council’s Let’s Get Moving campaign.

The take a cuppa challenge invites people to complete four simple exercises in the time it takes to boil the kettle, with a free demonstration of the exercises available on YouTube.

It is hoped the campaign will help residents to fight the winter blues and increase their health and wellbeing in the comfort of their own kitchen.

The wider Let’s Get Moving campaign encourages people who currently don’t do much physical activity to move more for a longer, healthier and happier life. Free and easy exercise videos are on the council’s YouTube channel as part of a number of health challenges that people are invited to take part in.

Any task can be turned into a chance to be more active such as hoovering for longer, doing heel raises while waiting for the kettle to boil or shoulder stretches while watching TV, gardening or walking to the local shop. Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said:

"We are a borough of tea lovers, which is why the cuppa challenge gives people a short and simple set of exercises to do while waiting for the kettle to boil.

"The Let’s Get Moving campaign is helping people who perhaps don’t enjoy sport or the gym to see that it isn’t only exercise in the traditional sense that counts – what matters is that people find ways to simply move more in their current lives.

"All daily activity makes a difference to our health such as weeding the garden, cleaning the home and taking a short walk around the block. And no matter what your current level of activity, it’s never too late to take the next step."

Different challenges will continue to be added to the webpages throughout the year and there is something for everyone no matter your age or fitness level. People can find out more at lets-get.com/move.
