Salvation Army launches ‘tattoo’ to spread awareness of modern slavery

This October, The Salvation Army is urging people to stand in solidarity with the millions of victims of modern slavery across the globe by wearing a temporary tattoo and joining the campaign online using #WeAreNotForSale.

In the lead-up to Anti-Slavery Day on Thursday 18 October, special edition temporary tattoos will be available from The Salvation Army charity shops in Dudley and Halesowen for a £1 donation. Proceeds of each donation will go to the charity’s Victim Care Fund, supporting its work with survivors of modern slavery.

The Salvation Army has held the government contract to provide specialist support to adult victims of modern slavery in England and Wales for more than seven years, supporting more than 7,000 victims in that time. Director of Anti-Trafficking and Modern Slavery for The Salvation Army Kathy Betteridge says that not only will the campaign raise essential funds for these victims, but will also help to raise awareness of the horrors of modern slavery happening every day. Kathy says:

“We really want to encourage people to share this message, either by wearing the tattoo or by sharing it online with their friends and families. The more people who know this is happening, the more people will start to spot the signs and help those who have no voice.

“We all have a part to play and together we can be a voice for the voiceless. Victims are bought and sold, abused and exploited for sex, drug production, cheap labour and much more. We cannot allow this to continue. This is not okay. We are not for sale.”

Supporters are being encouraged to help The Salvation Army spread the message online by sharing photos of them wearing their temporary tattoos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, using the hashtag #WeAreNotForSale.

A limited edition Facebook ‘frame’ will be available from facebook.com/salvationarmyuk and The Salvation Army will be making a jpeg of the design online at salvationarmy.org.uk.
