Touchdown for Tipton sports team

Sandwell’s top American Football team is on the lookout for new recruits after receiving a cash boost from the council.

The Sandwell Steelers have bought new equipment thanks to a £1,500 Cash for Sports Clubs grant from Sandwell Council.

The Steelers, who play their games at Tipton RSA Academy, have three teams for men, women and young people. Money from the grant paid for new helmets and shoulder pads for the youth team, which Chairman Rob Amor said had been a huge help. He said:

“Helmets and shoulder pads are the most important pieces of equipment for any American Football player. Without these, a lot of the children from our team would not be able to take part in a sport that they love. Everyone at the Sandwell Steelers would like to thank Sandwell Council for it's continued support.

"We're keen to get as many people as involved in this fantastic sport as possible. We try to keep our membership costs as low as possible in an effort to encourage more and more people to take up the sport, so if you're interested, please get in touch."

The Cash for Sports Club grant has seen nearly £50,000 handed out to 60 sporting clubs in Sandwell. Cllr Bill Gavan, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure, added:

“Our Cash for Sports Club grants are all about helping local organisation like the Sandwell Steelers. It’s brilliant to see both men and women of all ages getting involved with this growing sport.

"We wish the Sandwell Steelers the best of luck in their upcoming season.”
