Travellers park up on Kingswinford fields

Delays in the creation of a temporary travellers site have been emphasised after travellers set up camp on Ketley Fields in Kingswinford this afternoon.

Around five caravans arrived on the site, near to Crestwood Park Primary school, at lunch time, with local residents and councillors taking to social media to convey their anger. Cllr Peter Miller, representing Kingswinford South ward, said:

"I've spoken to the police and other council officers and representatives will be there first thing in the morning to move them on. I've also spoken to one of the travellers and explained the issues we've had with previous encampments.

"He promised they wouldn't make a mess and will leave the borough in the morning so we'll see if he stands by his promise.

"If the transit site had been in place and the current Labour council hadn't vetoed the plans the previous administration had put in place, this situation may not have happened."

Previous attempts to set up a temporary site in Coseley, which would give police more power to disperse travellers who set up camp in the borough, were put on hold when Labour took control from the Conservatives last year, as they looked to carry out their own review.

New council leader, Qadar Zada, announced he scrapped plans for the area on Budden Road, deeming the site completely unsuitable. Speaking to Dean Perks on Black Country Radio, he confirmed a new site had been found but details of location and timescale are yet to be confirmed.
