Youngsters Given The Chance To Learn Cricket Skills

Children aged eight to 16 can learn cricket skills and develop a passion for sport thanks to a national programme that’s coming to Dudley Leisure Centre.

The Wicketz project, which started in London and is funded by Lord’s Taverners, has been set up to help young people who live in areas where it may be difficult to access cricket facilities.

Dudley Council’s facility on Wellington Road will host the free sessions, which are being delivered in conjunction with Worcestershire Cricket Board, every Monday from 5 to 6pm and girls and boys of all abilities are welcome. Councillor Khursid Ahmed, cabinet member responsible for leisure, said:

“Sport has the power to transform lives in many ways because it not only helps people to keep fit but also changes lives and unites communities.

“Over 2,200 children have now engaged with cricket because of this fantastic programme and I’m delighted to see it starting up here in Dudley borough, something which we know is widely supported in the local community.”

Harry Kitchen, Wicketz Development Officer for Worcestershire Cricket, said:

“We are delighted to bring opportunities for young people to learn and enjoy from the benefits of cricket. I firmly believe cricket is the best teacher of all, helping young people learn about teamwork, respect, playing hard and playing fair, all essential skills as part of their development.

“Dudley has been selected as there is not a cricket club in the centre, meaning young people interested have nowhere to go. Through this scheme we will set up a club and create a community through cricket, right in the heart of Dudley.”

Leisure centre activities like these are part of a borough-wide council aim to encourage increased participation in sport and physical activity, along with the Let’s Get initiative, which also supports a move towards healthier eating.
