Emergency services issue blue light guidance

West Midlands Ambulance Service issue guidance to remind the public how to react to blue lights and sirens.

One of the services corporate Twitter users, Rob Moore, was discussing the publics reaction to ambulances travelling on blue lights to an emergency call.

He noted that, whilst driving a vehicle on blue lights, members of the public reacted in different ways. Some seemed to act on instinct and, albeit in good faith, a number of road users broke the law to give way.

Rob said:

"Whilst it’s great that people want to help us, this can be really dangerous. If you’re at a red light and there are blue lights behind you, we’ll either find a way around you, or wait.

"If the blue light vehicle turns its sirens off, this may indicate that we are waiting until it is safe to pass. Please only pass through a red traffic light if a police officer directs you to. Ambulance staff don’t have the powers to ask you to do that.”

Service chiefs have published a video which they say is a really useful tool that explains what to do to help emergency vehicles make progress safely.
