Man arrested following ram raid in Wolverhampton

Police have arrested a man following a raid at a Wolverhampton shop which led to officers being attacked and a patrol cars being rammed.

Officers were called to a ram raid at Sangha's Supermarket, Church Street, Bilston, where cash and cigarettes were stolen at around 2.30am on Monday morning. Officers arrived quickly at the scene and pursued a getaway BMW car until it came to a stop in Ettingshall Road, Parkfields.

Three people immediately jumped out and ran off but the driver rammed into the patrol car and then fled - but the undeterred officers sprang into action to arrest a 38-year-old man following a footchase.

The two officers were assaulted - suffering minor injuries – and a Taser was deployed to detain the suspect.

Cigarettes along with weapons were recovered from the BMW and officers are keen to hear from anyone who has seen the vehicle - registration number RE02 KXZ - since it was stolen on 27 February.

Enquiries are continuing around all those involved in the ram raid which saw a transit van rammed into the shutters.
