Black Country MP criticises social media giant

Stourbridge, MP Suzanne Webb has said that Facebook is putting its users in danger and she accused the company of losing its moral compass and only being interested in profit.

Suzanne has heard evidence from the victims of online hate, a Facebook whistleblower and Facebook executives over the last few weeks as part of the Draft Online Safety Bill Committee.

Its members were told yesterday that Facebook uses only 4% of its income to keep users and children safe online despite making billions and online hate on its platform being a major global issue. Suzanne said:

“I am deeply shocked and deeply concerned about the size of this business, its multi layers and the questions it consistently fails to answer about its accountability and ability to stop online hate from harming people, especially young people.

“I have been moved by the testimony of those who have suffered online hate or even lost loved ones because of it. I have been angered by the attitude of Facebook which still continues to believe it is simply a platform with little responsibility to actually police the bile it is allowing into homes across Britain and the world.

“As I said in the committee yesterday to a junior Facebook executive who clearly hadn’t even read the draft bill, when did Facebook lose its moral compass in the pursuit of billions in profits?

“Social media can be a force for good but too often it is a sewer vulnerable people are drowning in. It needs radical regulation and a radical rethink and, if I have anything to do with it, the upcoming online safety bill will be a beacon for others across the world to follow as we bring social media to account.”

Suzanne called the recent announcement that the name of Facebook’s parent company is changing "cynical and tone deaf". She added:

"Mark Zuckerberg could have made a host of other gestures, instead he chose a fancy new name for his company. I said in the committee yesterday that this company has too much power.

"Furthermore it has a monopoly on people’s thoughts and it is causing hate and division. If I had a child, I would do all I could to stop it from ever going anywhere near Facebook or Instagram.”
