Once facing the prospect of closure, The Civic in Brierley Hill has been transformed and hosts a packed entertainment programme with a renewed focus on audience experience and value for money.
Since being handed over to local charity Dudley CVS in 2015, Brierley Hill Civic has undergone a series of major improvements with further investment plans under discussion.
Cllr Adam Davies and Cllr Wayne Little, local ward councillors for Brierley Hill and Wordsley South, recently visited the venue to catchup with General Manager James Challis and Dudley CVS’s Andy Gray, praising the hard work that has gone into transforming the Civic back into a thriving community and entertainment hub.
With help from funding partners, upgrades at the Civic to date have included a better layout and complete refurb in the main bar, major audio/visual improvements, brand new toilet facilities, a new 'VIP ensuite' for performers, fresh decorating throughout, refurbished seating, and most recently a refurb of the temporary service areas.
James Challis, General Manager of The Civic, said: “Not too long ago this stunning venue faced closure and now it’s thriving. Thanks to my fantastic Civic Team, and with the support of Dudley CVS, our partners, and the community, we’ve transformed it into a vibrant space full of energy and life.
"The Civic has always belonged to its people, and we couldn’t be prouder to see it buzzing once again. There’s still much more to do, but we’re all excited for the future.”
Discussions are also ongoing regarding the adjoining police station building, which is expected to close under a plan by Labour Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster.
Concerned about the future of the station building after the police move out, Cllr Davies, Cllr Little, council officers, Brierley Hill Community Forum and Andy Gray from Dudley CVS have been working together to explore future uses for the building alongside potential funding opportunities.
Cllr Davies said: “The Civic team have worked incredibly hard to create a welcoming, vibrant venue for visitors – showing just what can be achieved when passionate people run great venues like the Civic.
“Of course, we’re incredibly frustrated and concerned that the Labour Police and Crime Commissioner is still saying he plans to close our police station – despite overwhelming opposition from local people – so we’re determined to do what we can to make sure the building is used positively for the benefit of the community.”
