In Walsall there are 20 wards, each with three councillors and, because of recent ward boundary changes this year, every single seat is up for grabs.

This means at the ballot box you will need to vote for three candidates.

The candidate with the highest number of votes will serve a four‑year term, the second‑placed candidate a two‑year term, and the third‑placed candidate a one‑year term.

This system allows the council to return to its usual electoral cycle. After this election, Walsall will return to electing by thirds where only one seat is contested at each election.

Because of the updated boundaries, you may be in a different ward than previously, and your usual polling station may have changed, so be sure to check your poll card closely.

Conservatives, Labour and Reform all have 60 candidates contesting every seat up for grabs.

The Greens have 53 seats covered, and the newly formed Walsall Community Independents have 20.

Also standing are 16 independent candidates, seven Liberal Democrats and five representing Advance UK.

Emma Bennett, returning officer at Walsall Council, said: “This year, we’ve seen 282 candidates put themselves forward for Walsall’s local elections.

“With updated ward boundaries, some polling stations moving, and voters able to choose up to three candidates, the 2026 elections may feel different for many residents.

“I’d encourage everyone who is eligible to make sure they’re registered to vote. It takes just a few minutes but it means you can have your say on the decisions that affect your community.

“If you’ve recently turned 18 or moved home, please check your details now so you’re ready to vote.”

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, May 7, and voters must show photo ID.
