The duo behind BlacBrik, officially launched their full-scale choreographic debut with an exclusive visit to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.
Choreographers Nahum McLean and Darius Drooh and their company, BlacBrik, are pictured in a dynamic set of photos, captured through the lens of eleven10, as they explore Wolverhampton Grand Theatre for the first time ahead of their premiere performances between 5th to 7th October.
The Brown Suite, which forms part of Wolverhampton Grand’s Black History Month celebrations is a bold, funk-fuelled production that pulses with rhythm, style and soul to the music of James Brown, Etta James and Sam Cooke.
In an exclusive interview for Wolverhampton Grand Theatre’s SpotLight Podcast, Nahum said: “What we do is accessible to all audiences. It might be music from the 70s but we reimagine it.
"I know for a fact we will see audience members who grew up with this music, but the younger generation are going to love this too! We’ve always wanted to produce high quality dance that anyone can watch.”
BlacBrik is a dance company co-founded by Nahum, originally from Manchester, and Darius from California. Their collaborative journey began in New York, where they both trained and took early steps in choreography, notably contributing to the NYC Jazz Choreography Festival. Despite branching out as movement artists, the duo maintained their commitment to their shared choreographic vision.
Based in London, Nahum is a choreographer, dancer, and rehearsal director, his career spans contemporary dance, commercial theatre, and film. Nahum trained at The Ailey School on scholarship, toured internationally with West Side Story, and performed in London’s West End in Inala – A Zulu Ballet. He was also a member of Richard Alston Dance Company.
Darius' performance credits include the West End production of The Lion King. He has received the Beach Blanket Babylon scholarship and choreographed for the NYC Jazz Choreography Festival. His training includes scholarships to prestigious programs such as The Ailey School.
The Brown Suite is set in the vibrant world of 1970s New York nightlife, with audiences transported into a community where music is more than entertainment. It is a force that brings people together, shapes identities and creates spaces of belonging. An unmissable dance theatre experience set to the sound of James Brown, Etta James and Sam Cooke.
The show is produced by Fundamentally Dance, an independent dance production company redefining how audiences experience dance at all scales.
