Sandwell Council is continuing its fight against illegal shops with the latest batch of court-ordered closures in Cradley Heath.
The councils trading standards team has secured two further closure orders against premises linked to illegal activity, reinforcing its commitment to protecting communities, supporting legitimate businesses and tackling crime on local high streets.
G&G Market and A&E Market, both in Cradley Heath, have been linked to the sale of illegal tobacco, with seizures of illicit products made, and have previously failed test purchase and underage sales operations. The court also triggered a licence review in respect of G&G Market.
This latest action, undertaken in partnership with West Midlands Police, follows continued intelligence-led investigations into concerns raised about illegal activity in Cradley Heath.
The closure orders, granted by the court, means the shops must cease trading and remain closed for 3 months, disrupting suspected criminal activity and helping to protect residents and businesses in the area.
This latest operation follows recent successful enforcement activity across the borough and demonstrates Sandwell Council's determination to use all available powers to tackle unlawful businesses and improve the safety and appearance of town centres.
The Council has previously called for stronger powers for local authorities and supports Government proposals to extend the maximum duration of Closure Orders from three months to 12 months under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Councillor Bob Jones, Sandwell Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement, said: "These latest Closure Order’s sends a clear message that Sandwell Council will not tolerate illegal activity operating from our high streets."
"We are continuing to work closely with West Midlands Police and our partners to identify businesses that are breaking the law and take robust enforcement action where there is evidence to do so."
"The vast majority of businesses across Sandwell make a positive contribution to our communities and local economy. Our focus is on protecting those legitimate traders, supporting residents and ensuring our town centres remain safe, welcoming and vibrant places for everyone."
"Today's action demonstrates that our strengthened approach is delivering results and we will continue using every tool available to disrupt criminal activity and hold those responsible to account."
Tackling criminal and anti-social behaviour remains a key priority for Sandwell Council, with officers continuing to work alongside police and other agencies to gather intelligence, investigate concerns and take enforcement action where necessary.
Further updates will be provided following due legal process.
