Council launch new scheme to tackle loneliness in Dudley

As many people prepare to celebrate the summer with barbecues and parties, others might be feeling isolated and lonely.

Dudley Council will launch a four week campaign on Thursday 21st June called ‘Pleased To Meet You’, offering older people who are feeling lonely or isolated the chance to talk to and meet others in Dudley borough.

People aged 60 and over can call the pleased to meet you telephone line for a chat, where a council officer will provide them with support and advice on finding enjoyment and purpose in later life.

The council is also starting up groups who can meet to socialise and take part in various activities. Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member for adult social care, said:

“Evidence shows that being lonely can be as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. No one should have to feel isolated or lonely and that is why we are launching this campaign.”
