Council marks Occupational Therapy Week

Walsall Council will be raising awareness of its occupational therapy service and the vital work it does during Occupational Therapy Week.

The week runs from Monday 6 to Sunday 12 November 2023. Councillor Kier Pedley, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care at Walsall Council, said:

“Every year, nearly 2,000 residents across the borough benefit from occupational therapy provided by the council.

“Our occupational therapists and assistants support people of all ages to help maintain their independence. They make a huge difference to so many lives and what they do has a positive impact, helping people overcome challenges completing everyday tasks and activities.

“We want people to live healthy and independent lives in their own community and this care and support from Walsall Council helps our residents live the lives they want.”

Occupational therapists are skilled professionals who help people overcome challenges and support them to enjoy life, work and leisure activities as independently as possible.

They help individuals gain or regain certain skills and support often comes in the form of special equipment, or adaptations to homes. Sometimes, it can mean helping people adapt and find a new way to do things.

The focus is on enhancing a person’s wellbeing and their ability to participate in activities. The work of the occupational therapy service at Walsall Council makes a real difference and changes the way people feel about the future.

The service is available to assess the needs of people living across the borough and in August 2023 the council opened a new clinic based at the Goscote Centre in Walsall. Assessments for low-level equipment and adaptations can be completed here or at home.
