A council has scrapped a restriction to allow a storage facility to permanently open 24 hours a day.
The storage facility, which contains more than 50 shipping containers, opened opposite the Diamond Bus depot off Tipton Road in Tividale, Oldbury, last year.
Sandwell Council granted the move temporary two-year planning permission with restricted opening hours after 24-hour plans were rejected.
Plans submitted earlier this year by Simon Dunn from Oldbury-based bus operator Rotala to make the facility permanent and 24-hour have now been backed by Sandwell Council.
Under the previous approval, the opening hours for the storage facility were restricted to 7am to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to 3pm and 12pm to 2pm every Saturday and Sunday.
The application submitted in February this year said the changes would result in minimal noise.
“Noise monitoring was carried out over a number of weeks to determine the current impact of the storage operations on the surrounding neighbours,” the application said.
“The report concluded that the current site generates very low operational noise, particularly when in comparison with other dominant noise sources within the area.
“From the applicant’s experience in operating other sites the general hours of use are 8am-6pm, and nighttime activity is a rarity.
“Therefore, with the extension of the operating hours, only a low noise impact could be expected on the closest residential properties.”
The former NHS labs and offices on the corner of Tipton Road and John’s Lane had been empty for nearly a decade when the plans were submitted in 2024 with part of the land only recently used as a car park by the Diamond bus company.
The land was home to SGS House, a pharmaceutical testing facility and NHS laboratory, before closing in 2008.
The majority of the NHS offices were demolished in 2020.
