Council seeking volunteers to become heritage historians

Dudley Council is seeking budding historians to become heritage volunteers.

People interested in heritage and local history are being sought to share their knowledge and passion at local heritage activities and events. The project forms part of the township heritage scheme which aims to increase appreciation of the borough’s town centres and its heritage attractions.

The council is hosting a special event Dudley Archives and Local History Centre in Tipton road to explain the range of opportunities available and how the volunteers would be supported. Anyone interested can come along to the information day on Saturday 3 February from 10.30 – 1pm.

There will be speakers from the museum service, the archives and local history team and the borough archaeologist who will talk about the opportunities available to volunteers. Anyone coming along will be able to sign up to the council’s database of volunteers on the day.

No experience of volunteering is necessary as there will be the opportunity to enrol on a free course with the adult and community learning team. The short course helps participants to understand the roles and responsibilities and the qualities and skills needed to be a good volunteer. Councillor Ian Kettle, cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise said:

“The heritage volunteers programme is a great way for people who are passionate about local history and heritage to share their knowledge with a new audience.

“The free training from the adult and community learning team gives people the skills and confidence they need to take part in community events, and they can draw further inspiration from the council’s skilled and supportive museums and archives staff who will be there to talk to on the day.”
