Council swimming ahead with leisure centre plans

Ongoing proposals to build a brand new leisure centre in Dudley and to revamp two existing borough centres are to be discussed at the council’s cabinet meeting next week.

In a report to Dudley Council’s cabinet on Wednesday March 21, members will be asked to discuss plans for a new leisure centre in Dudley. They will also review plans to refurbish and modernise the existing leisure centres in Halesowen and Stourbridge.

At this stage the estimated capital cost of the total scheme, including the new centre and refurbishment work at Halesowen and Crystal, is £24.5 million. This figure will be reviewed as plans are further developed.

The proposed new leisure centre could be located on Flood Street and will feature a 25metre eight lane training pool, a smaller learner pool, a changing village, a brand new 100 station gym, a five court sports hall, two studios and an associated viewing area and café. The existing Wellington Road centre will remain open until the new centre is complete in order to ensure continuity of service. Councillor Ian Kettle, cabinet member responsible for leisure centres, said:

“There is a huge demand for three leisure centres in our borough and this latest proposal demonstrates our commitment to retaining this level of service for our residents.

“These exciting proposals put forward plans for a fantastic new centre in Dudley town and will see the rejuvenation of our popular centres located in Halesowen and Stourbridge.

“The plans could also free up the existing leisure centre site for a new residential development although it must be stressed that the existing centre would not close until a new facility is open.”

Council bosses have stressed there will be ongoing consultation with local businesses and residents about the leisure centre plans. For more information about leisure centres go to dudley.gov.uk/sport or call 01384 812800.
