It’s nearly ten years since the first same sex marriage ceremony was held in the UK and Dudley Council wants to celebrate.

Same sex marriage became law in July 2013, with the first ceremonies taking place at the end of March 2014. Dudley Registrar’s hosted their first ceremonies on Saturday 29 March 2014, the day that these marriages could first be held.

The authority wants to mark this milestone and is asking any same sex couples who married that year, or indeed in the ten years since to get in touch via the Dudley Register Office facebook page.

The team would like to re-share some of these memories on its social media accounts, and if there is enough interest, to host a vow renewal ceremony for same sex couples who tied the knot in the borough over the last ten years. Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said:

“29 March 2014 was a hugely important date for equality. Thanks to the change in the law, same sex couples can now have the same marriage ceremony as everyone else.

"We’ve married more than 250 same sex couples at our register offices over the last ten years, and we look forward to continuing to do so into the future.”
