Dudley Council is joining the hundreds of concerned citizens reporting driving offences to West Midlands Police through Operation Snap.

The initiative calls on people to report any driving offences they’ve captured on their dash-cam, CCTV or passenger mobile phone.

Concerned citizens simply upload their footage and certain details, including time, date, location, reg no, make and colour of vehicle, and details of the offence to the Operation Snap website

Dudley Council has been submitting some of its CCTV records to Operation Snap since January 2025 following reports from bus operators, residents, business and councillors of dangerous driving.

It is continuing to supply CCTV footage from across the borough, with many offences resulting in a fixed penalty notices or even going to court.

The council’s corporate landlord services runs the councils CCTV room and works closely with the police on Operation Snap and other crime reporting and community safety projects.

Offences can include dangerous driving, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, failing to stop at a red traffic light, using a trailer in lane three of a motorway, crossing solid white lines or any other offence where a driver is clearly not in proper control of a vehicle. If an offence is identified, the driver can be prosecuted or told to take a driver improvement course.

Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure said: “We realised that we held a lot of footage which could be helpful in prosecuting careless or dangerous drivers. We’ve been submitting this data for months and have helped to contribute to the significant number of prosecutions.

“With so many people having dashcams and home CCTV it’s worth remembering that if you capture any of this behaviour on camera you can report it and help to keep our roads safer for everyone.”
