Dudley pays tribute to fallen heroes

Thousands of people gathered in Dudley borough today to pay tribute to the sacrifices of servicemen and women.

Members of the public joined current and former servicemen and women, community groups and dignitaries at the Remembrance Sunday service in Dudley organised by Dudley Council.

There was a parade from Vicar Street, along High Street, Stone Street, Priory Street and Priory Road, before the service at the cenotaph, which was broadcast live by Black Country Radio.

Reverend James Treasure led the service at Coronation Gardens alongside the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Pete Lee, and Deputy Lieutenant Richard Boot OBE.

The event concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph, where civic dignitaries, armed forces members, military charities, and representatives from local businesses, schools and colleges paid their respects to the fallen.

Councillor Pete Lee, the Mayor of Dudley, said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to have led tributes today to those who serve or have served in the armed forces and pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and this borough.

“I would like to thank everyone who came and joined us to show their support and pay their respects at our Remembrance Sunday service today.”

On Tuesday November 11 at 10.55 veterans will join the Mayor of Dudley, councillors, council staff, and members of the public at the First World War Clock Tower Memorial in Priory Street to mark Armistice Day. The service, which marks the end of the First World War, includes the laying of wreaths and a two-minute silence.

Priory Street will be closed from 10.30am to 11.30am during the event, with alternative routes clearly signposted.

Residents are also invited to pay their respects by placing a poppy in the Cross of Remembrance in Dudley Market Place. The cross will be in place until Monday November 24, with personal tributes welcome.
