Dudley Zoo and Castle has won a top industry award for its Reindeer Ravine.
The zoo was named the winner of the ‘Habitats’ category at the prestigious British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquarium (BIAZA) Awards for the in-house transformation of the former Bear Ravine for its reindeer herd.
Zoo Director Matt Lewis, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be recognised by the zoo community for the innovative work of our team here at DZC in the design and construction of Reindeer Ravine.
“Since relocating the herd two years ago, we’ve seen significant positives in animal welfare and species management as well as visitor engagement, which all reinforce the improved suitability of the new habitat for the species.”
The habitat includes Nordic-inspired animal dens, a large gravelled outdoor paddock, hardstand areas and outdoor shelters. It also encompasses the sweeping grassed space of the zoo’s iconic Tecton, which provides alternative advantage points for visitors viewing.
BIAZA CEO Dr Jo Judge said: “This is an incredible achievement reflecting the very best in the zoo and aquarium community. We are at the very forefront of the fightback for nature, which needs all our help.
"As leaders we are absolutely committed to the very highest levels of animal welfare, conservation, education and research – all while offering brilliant days out for the family.”
